Zac Jackson's Grim Deshaun Watson Prediction: 10.5 Quarters and Out

About this episode

The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima is made possible by:

The Athletic's Zac Jackson joins Ken and Anthony to set an over/under of 10.5 quarters on how long Deshaun Watson lasts as the Browns' starter, questioning whether anyone outside the building actually believes in him. He also breaks down Baker Mayfield's near-identical statistical output across his career despite the revisionist narratives, and previews the murky quarterback picture behind Watson, including Taylen Green's limited reps and Cleveland's likely path toward drafting a passer high next spring.

We'll always see Taylor and Greene in this game on Sunday. How long will we see DeShon Watson start for this football team for the Cleveland Browns? Zach Jackson is going to answer these questions and more. Will Shadour Sanders make that to Sean Watson actually remember to go out for the coin toss, unlike Shadour Sanders? Will he be able to pull that off as the captain this week? Let's bring in Zach Jackson. He's on the Wise Heart right. We make a right co-car right. Hotline, he's from the athletic forum on Twitter, out at Akron Jackson. Hello Zach. Good morning gentlemen. What are we talking about today? We're talking about the Browns. To well, I don't know, we just got into a whole fight about the Major League Baseball schedule, but I don't think you care about that. How long do you see DeShon Watson actually starting for the Browns this year? I put the over under a 10 and a half quarters. Now if he makes it to the over, then he probably makes it through the first month because it'd be hard on that short week. But I just don't know what anybody sees in this. I don't know anybody outside the building that sees what they see. I mean, we've seen this guy play. We know what it

looks like. You hear the coach say body of work and we know his body of work. So how two years later, could it be any better? Well, you had me at first where you said 10 and a half on a thought games, and then you said quarter is what that's the thing minutes. That's the Zach we love. Minutes? Yeah, I imagine it's got to be a quick hook. I mean, that game against Buffalo. And we did have a couple of callers going, well, he's playing with third teamers. He's playing against third teamers. And he's supposed to be a franchise guy. Like I'm sorry. If you drop Tom Brady in there at 30 years old against a bunch of third teamers, he probably would have pieced up a bunch of third teamers. Yeah, that's a tough one. And we know the circumstances that day and he clearly came out and admitted he wasn't right. But how is that different than way back that day? And in 2022 and Houston, when Kansas, the thing is he had to come out and say just forget that one. There was so much going on. It was nearly within his own head. It didn't happen. Well, what followed that? Bad play. Bad play. Yeah.

Well, then I guess we can just close the book on him. Well, no, honestly. So what happens? Like, what would they do? All right, say he goes out there. I got to prepare for the worst first when it comes to him. And then we can try to be more positive with some others. Like say, he only makes it eight quarters. And he gets made the backup. Do they come to some sort of an agreement with him or something like that? And we never see him again. Or is he just stayed the backup and we move on about the season? Yeah, I mean, you would think logic would dictate it when he's out. He's out, right? Because he shouldn't be in the future plans. But I don't know. It's hard to get into hypotheticals. And honestly, both in fairness and in reality, like it's hard to get into hypotheticals here. There wasn't a day that this offense in an open practice had everybody and was going, right? They had one time for two hours against Buffalo starters. It's a new coach. The juice comes from the new receivers who we know are talented. And we haven't seen them go against NSL ones and we haven't seen them get skimmed against. But they can play. They can help

this guy. Like Harold Shannon, he can really help this guy. So, you know, let's see how it goes. I just, I think there's a real ceiling on it. And then you wonder how he mentally reacts to the very first thing that goes wrong. And so I expect the game plan that keeps him out of harm's way as much as possible for as long as possible. But how does he react and how does the team react to the first thing that goes wrong? I mean, they are, they're 9.00 dogs this week and 6.500 dogs next week. I mean, by NSL standards, that's pretty strong. They're not expected to perform well. And if they don't, you know, we know what could be coming. We don't know how it's going to go. But we haven't seen any of this and goofy things happen. And early in NSL season, we saw that just last year. We see that every year, right? So I'm a little bit open-minded and not making firm predictions. But I just, there's nothing that I've seen for the last six weeks or for four years.

It tells me that this has any hope. Well, Zach, we did kind of catch win towards the end of the available practices for media that the RPO stuff was a little more of an emphasis. You weren't going to really do that with Shador. It's comical because he's not even fast and where he doesn't have one skill that challenges NSL defenses. But yeah, you're right. That's probably what they're going to do. And really tied hinted throughout the whole spring that experience and mobility had given lots in the edge. He outright said that a couple of times. He danced around it a few other times. So we probably are going to see that. But that to me is just comical. Well, that's what I'm asking. The way that you see teams, especially first quarter of the year, we saw, you know, Daniel Jones and what Indy was able to do. Can you, can you gimmick things up to an extent? Because the fight thing is the minute you got to Sean Watson, even before the injuries ravaged him in the surgeries. They weren't really instituting a lot of that stuff

that I thought at times, you know, he was able to get out and move and used it. And that just didn't seem to be a part of the part of the offensive format with Kevin Stofanski. So it seemed like Todd thought even post surgery. They maybe we can do some of that. Yeah, I mean, Kendor, if you hadn't come in and throw inside, ways past us, right? It didn't work. Now they didn't have judgekins. They didn't have Santa. They didn't. So yes, and theory. But to your point, remember that game in Jacksonville two years ago, they scored in the first drive he ran it in. Normally touched on. They got the rest of the game. One zero. Damn it. So yeah, no, like I said, I expect judgekins and conception on to get a bunch of touches. I do think when I think about the Sean's body of work from the summer, I think he had success finding Harold Fanon over the middle. And Harold Fanon was limited through camp to have him ready for this. In the joint practice, he did throw two passes down the field for big completions. Now, then all the other practices,

there were two more, but there was two that day. And that was the most important and most competitive setting. So maybe, but I just I don't hold out a lot of optimism. Zach Baker may feel just signed that extension yesterday. There's been a lot of revisionist history over the last four, going on five years of Baker, main field. What was your, do you remember your original thoughts back in 20? I remember we had you on the day after that Pittsburgh game at night. I told you he was never going to be in the building. Yeah. And so it's just said, and damn it, you were right. You were right about that one. I mean, what, how would you handle? Do you remember what you said and do you think that you would change how you would handle it? If you said it any different than how it went or what do you got? Yeah, yeah, I mean, I think both sides have regrets, but I think it got toxic, guys. And I think two things happened. I think the Browns correctly judged that Baker may feel was never going to be that a list, put a franchise on its back and go to February quarterback. Right. And I think that they had done all this research and they knew that the quarterbacks don't become available unless you draft them real high or you have some

lightning strike. And they saw this window with Watson and they decided to go for it. They paid the price and other teams weren't willing to pay. And so they went for it. And obviously it's missed historically and it's tossed all sorts of things. So I actually even before the extension came out last night, guys, because I was getting ready for this. And the next week I was looking at Baker stats like he's kind of been the same quarterback. There are two up years, his rookie year and in 24, there are two down years, the injury year and the transition year. You know, his numbers are the same. His results are the same. And he has had a successful NFL career. He just got guaranteed another 160 million dollars. Right. But like he's been the same guy and they decided it wasn't going to work here. And Baker has admitted that he was not going to do what he did for two years in Tampa, two plus years before kind of bad last year for a stretch that he needed to grow up. And so they moved on and the Browns just made the worst decision and moving on. Do you guys

know what his record was in Cleveland? I was I was closing myself on the last night and I just missed by a couple. Was he 500? He was one game under 500. He was 29 and 30. And what was staggering about that is that in four years, he started 59 games and in four years, what's in the start in 18 games? Boy, that's some. Well, damn it. I almost forgot what I was I was thinking about this. So I almost forgot what I was going to ask you. Is there a lesson that can be learned by the Browns here? Or if you were in charge of the Browns, would you still do the same thing and give all that up for what you believe is a court? I mean, the lesson learned, I that that's a heck of a question and they would have to answer that. And you know, last last year in 25, they came out and told us they were on a quarterback search. Can they they publicized where they were? They said this was a swing in a miss and that wasn't a hot take. It was a fact. And they delivered a third round quarterback who's actually a seventh round quarterback and a fifth round quarterback who's actually a fifth round quarterback

and they have the same guy back on the field. So what if they learned, we can answer that. Now, how does the whole thing apply to the future? That's that's what's interesting. And that's why I'm watching guys now like Darian Metsa and turn it ad Jamblist who are going into college and you know, Baker going into his last year was not considered a number one pick and he was small. He was a little bit of a wild card. And so we'll see. You know, that the 90 per the 85 is percent result of this is the Browns are drafting a quarterback high. And then what becomes fascinating over the next few months and then six and seven is like, it doesn't have to be a top three quarterback. And especially if your team is in a position where the other guys and the other position groups really are good and really are offending, you know, maybe there is an opportunity where someone becomes available. So I think before Baker signed it yesterday, there's 11 guys, 11 or 12 guys who are going to start this weekend who are eligible for free agency in some regard next year. Now, obviously, if they're

good teams, don't let them go. And one of them is to Sean Watson, one of them's Bryce Young. You know, but like what are these resolutions going to be and who's going to get these contracts and is going to be available? I don't know. So we're probably headed for that high first round quarterback. And then maybe you got to give up this abundance of picks, but we don't know. But I mean, it's pretty certain that they're headed for for a quarterback search. Hey, real quick, Reu is impressed with Dante more on Saturday as I was. I barely saw any of Dante. I am impressed with him. I think he made the right decision to come back to school. But I asked you what you guys were talking about because this morning I was listening to Nate Tyson, they improved their top quarterbacks. Like, I know it's still September 10th, but I'm all in baby. That's our, that's our exact checks and go ahead there, Tony. Yeah, what about the tail in green and the coach keeping it open right now, as far as the speculation on whether or not he'll be active on game day and what it means for Shador. Yeah, that was the smart answer. Um, coaches obsess over giving the opponent little things to

worry about. That goes back to Eric Mangini. Um, I think that Shador will be the number two. You know, I think that if tail and is active, it will be an active situation and not Shador being down is the number three, but I don't know. And we have to wonder. And even if Jacksonville prepares for it, they wouldn't know exactly what to prepare for because we saw so little. But I mean, tail and green got one half of a preseason game and one series in the joint practice. And other than that, there was only one or two days where he got any competitive reps at all. So it would be awfully bold to put him in a situation to where he might have to quarterback and then a fel game on Sunday. And if you make him the two and Sanders the three, you can't do that. So that just to me, is a risk not worth taking. Now, if everybody's healthy and they feel like they have special teams back up and they feel like it's a real package that they need, then sure, but I think that's probably a back season thing. And he was just answering the question in the way that he should for strategic reasons. The rest of the roster for game day. I mean, we pour into this every single

year. We talk about special teams. What is your prediction? I know you tend to get these things right when it comes to how Todd Munkins going to formulate the roster. Yeah, I'm interested because it's a new staff. So last year, we kind of knew who the core special teams guys were. And I don't think all 53 are perfectly healthy, but like everybody is going to be available on Sunday unless there's been a setback over the last week, right? So the backups, the guy they want to be the backup center hasn't played. He missed the whole preseason with an injury to his snapping hand. Under the last coaching staff, those were usually safety in linebackers to play on special teams. But this is a new coaching staff, so we don't know. So, concept the owner is going to be the part returner. Coralie, I think, is going to be one of the kick returners and he's going to be one of the core special teams guys, so he's going to be active. But like they have 10 offensive linemen, I don't think they're going to address all those guys. So there's little games that you play there. That's something I have a better feel for in a few weeks just because it's a new staff.

Zach, can't thank you enough for the, is there anything else you wanted to ask him? I'm sorry. Oh, how's the Texas? Oh, gosh, I'm sorry. Zach, please go ahead. Yeah, so this is such an important game because last year, it was Julian Sains first start, and it was Arches first big start, and it was ugly. So now you're getting the same guys to from an NFL evaluation standpoint, and it's not the first game of the year, which is just better for everybody, better for the teams, better for the viewers, better for the scouts. So yeah, so I, you know, it's probably the little past my bedtime, especially in late four big ball game, but this is an interesting one. And, you know, everybody you listen to anything, it's arching more, and then there's a tier break as of right now. So this is a great test. And it's not the only test for Texas, but this is a great test. And Ohio State lost all that front line talent, but they still have an NFL coordinator, and they still have plenty of talent. Texas has upgraded its offense as talent. Either guy Kim Coleman could very well be the second

receiver off the board after Jeremiah Smith, and they have Wingo, they brought in two backs, like they're loaded. So this is going to be really good, and it's going to be really important game in terms of, you know, where guys stand when the quarterback rankings are become your main topic, the conversation here in about five or six weeks. The main topic in five or six weeks, you have not paid attention to the graphic that's been on YouTube, Zach. Much just a watch list though. Oh, no, you got to embrace it. You got to embrace what's being said. I'm so hard, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Zach, thank you so much for the time. I appreciate you in yours. Give no one my best. Take care. Thanks, guys. Goodbye. Zach Jackson on the Wise Heart, right? We make it right. Call Call right, hotline outstanding stuff from him. And I think that you might have just crystallized it there. He might have just crystallized it there. If you're wondering why fans aren't that into it, Zach said it, and it really has nothing to do with history. It's about the right now. You know it,

he knows it. He's the one who said it out loud, and you're going to agree. You'll hear about that in five on the fan.
