Last Ottoman Caliph
Abdülmecid II was the last Ottoman Caliph, ruling from 1876 to 1909. He was the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the last caliph of Islam. Abdülmecid II was born in 1832 and ascended to the throne at the age of 44. He was known for his efforts to modernize the Ottoman Empire and his attempts to preserve the empire's independence in the face of European encroachment. Abdülmecid II was also a patron of the arts and architecture, and his reign saw the construction of several notable buildings in Istanbul. He died in 1918 and was succeeded by his nephew, Mehmed V. Abdülmecid II is remembered as a significant figure in Ottoman history and a symbol of the empire's decline.
