Alfred Dreyfus was a French army officer who was wrongly accused of treason in the late 19th century. He was born in Paris, France in 1850 and came from a Jewish family. Dreyfus was a decorated officer who had served in the French army with distinction, but he was accused of being a spy for Germany. Despite his protests of innocence, Dreyfus was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. His case became a major scandal in France and sparked a national debate about anti-Semitism and the role of the military in French society. Dreyfus died in 1935 while still in prison.
