Victim of alleged demonic possession
Anneliese Michel was a German woman who died in 1976 after undergoing a series of exorcisms. Her case drew widespread attention and sparked a debate about the use of exorcisms as a treatment for mental illness. Michel was a devout Catholic and had been experiencing strange physical and emotional symptoms, which her family and doctors attributed to demonic possession. The exorcisms were performed by two Catholic priests, who used a combination of prayer, fasting, and physical restraint to try to rid Michel of the supposed demon. The case ultimately ended in tragedy, with Michel dying from malnutrition and starvation. Michel's case has been the subject of numerous books, films, and documentaries, and remains a topic of interest and debate today.
