Founder of the Keokuk Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society
Annie Wittenmyer was a pioneering American social worker and humanitarian who dedicated her life to helping those in need. Born in 1813 in New York, Annie grew up in a family of modest means and was raised with strong values of compassion and service. She moved to Iowa in the 1840s and became involved in the local community, where she founded the Keokuk Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society to provide aid to soldiers and their families. Annie was a trailblazer for women's rights and was known for her tireless work ethic and her ability to bring people together to achieve a common goal. She was also a skilled cook and was famous for her ability to feed large crowds with limited resources. Annie passed away in 1881, but her legacy lives on through the many organizations and charities that she founded.
