British archaeologist and classical scholar
Arthur Evans was a British archaeologist and classical scholar who is best known for his excavations at the Minoan palace of Knossos on the island of Crete. Evans was a prominent figure in the field of classical archaeology and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America in 1920. He was also a prolific writer and published several books on the subject of Minoan civilization. Evans was a fellow of the Royal Society and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1919.
