Founder of Motown Records
Berry Gordy Jr. is an American music executive, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the founder of Motown Records, one of the most successful record labels in the history of popular music. Gordy was born on November 28, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan. He began his music career as a songwriter and producer, and in 1959, he founded Motown Records with a small group of artists and staff. Under his leadership, Motown became a major force in the music industry, producing hits by artists such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Jackson 5. Gordy has won numerous awards for his contributions to music, including multiple Grammy Awards. He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
