Bessie Coleman was an African-American woman and Native American woman who became the first African-American woman and first Native American woman to earn a pilot's license in 1921. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in a family of modest means. Coleman was fascinated by aviation from an early age and worked multiple jobs to save money for flying lessons. Despite facing racism and sexism in the aviation industry, she persevered and eventually earned her pilot's license.
