Birgés János (1920-1968) was a Hungarian-born American farmer, activist, and writer. He was a key figure in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and a prominent figure in the American counterculture movement of the 1960s. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Birgés emigrated to the United States in the 1940s and settled in California. He was known for his charismatic personality, his commitment to social justice, and his unorthodox lifestyle. Birgés was also a prolific writer and published several books on politics, philosophy, and spirituality. He was a close friend and mentor to many prominent figures of the time, including Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary. Birgés János died under mysterious circumstances in 1968, at the age of 48, and his life and legacy continue to fascinate and inspire people to this day.
