Scottish royal and military leader
James Francis Edward Stuart, commonly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was the grandson of James II of England and VII of Scotland. He was a military leader and royal claimant to the British throne. Born in 1720, Charlie was educated in France and Italy before returning to Scotland to lead the Jacobite rising of 1745. He was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and went into exile in France. Charlie died in 1788 at the age of 68. He is remembered as a symbol of Scottish nationalism and a romantic figure in Scottish folklore.
