British politician and economist
Charles Trevelyan was a British politician and economist who served as the Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1846 to 1852. He was a key figure in the British government's response to the Great Famine, and his policies have been widely criticized for their inadequacy. Trevelyan was a strong advocate for laissez-faire economics and believed that the market should be allowed to regulate itself. He was also a strong supporter of the British monarchy and was known for his conservative views. Trevelyan was born in England and educated at Cambridge University. He went on to serve in various roles in the British government, including as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Trevelyan died in 1879 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
