Charles W. Chesnutt was an American author, lawyer, and civil rights activist. He is best known for his novels and short stories that explored the experiences of African Americans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chesnutt was a prominent figure in the NAACP and was awarded the Spingarn Medal in 1922.
