He was the founder of Gulf+Western, a conglomerate that owned several major media companies, including Paramount Pictures. Bluhdorn was known for his volatile personality and his ability to spot talent. He was a mentor to several notable figures, including Barry Diller. Bluhdorn died in 1997 at the age of 81.
