Theoretical physicist and director of the Manhattan Project
J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist and director of the Manhattan Project, the secret research and development project that produced the atomic bomb during World War II. He was born in New York City and studied physics at Harvard University. Oppenheimer worked at the University of California, Berkeley, and was a key figure in the development of the atomic bomb. He was also a prominent figure in the development of quantum mechanics and was awarded the Enrico Fermi Award for his work. Oppenheimer was a complex and conflicted figure, known for his strong convictions and his ability to balance scientific rigor with moral and philosophical considerations. He died in 1967 at the age of 62.
