American novelist and short story writer
Edith Wharton was a renowned American novelist and short story writer. Born in 1862 in New York City, she began her writing career in the late 19th century and went on to become one of the most celebrated authors of her time. Wharton is best known for her novels of manners, which explored the lives of the American aristocracy during the Gilded Age. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. Wharton's works include The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, and The House of Mirth.
