Edward VIII was the King of the United Kingdom from January 20, 1936, until his abdication on December 11, 1936. He was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. Edward was known for his love of luxury, fashion, and the arts. He was also known for his affair with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. Edward's decision to abdicate the throne was a major scandal in British history. He was succeeded by his brother, King George VI. Edward and his wife, Wallis, lived in exile in France and later in the United States. Edward died in 1972 at the age of 77. He was buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, Windsor.
