Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, commonly known as El Cid, was a Spanish warrior and leader who lived in the 11th century. He is best known for his military campaigns against the Moors in Spain and his role in the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. El Cid was a skilled military leader and was known for his bravery and strategic thinking. He was also a patron of the arts and architecture, and his court was renowned for its culture and learning. El Cid died in 1099 while on campaign against the Moors.
