Eliza Haycraft was a remarkable woman who built a fortune running brothels in 19th-century St. Louis. She was known for her generosity and philanthropy, but also faced social ostracism for her profession. Haycraft was born in 1815 in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in her early 20s. She worked as a teacher and a businesswoman before opening her first brothel in St. Louis. Haycraft was a shrewd entrepreneur who expanded her business to include several other brothels and became one of the wealthiest women in the city. Despite her success, Haycraft faced significant social stigma and was often shunned by society. She died in 1890 at the age of 75.
