Jesuit priest and missionary
Fr. Jacques Marquette was a Jesuit priest and missionary who played a significant role in the history of Christianity in Japan. Born in 1637 in Quebec, Canada, Marquette was educated at the College of Sainte-Foye and later joined the Jesuits. He traveled to Japan in 1669 and spent several years there, during which time he worked to convert the Japanese people to Christianity. Marquette was known for his kindness and compassion, and was particularly devoted to the poor and the sick. He died in 1710 at the age of 73.
