Senator and Chairman of the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities
Frank Church was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Idaho from 1957 to 1981. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served as the Chairman of the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, also known as the Church Committee, from 1975 to 1976. The committee investigated the intelligence agencies and their activities, including the CIA, FBI, and NSA. Church was born on February 27, 1924, in Boise, Idaho, and graduated from Yale University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and later became a lawyer. Church was known for his progressive policies and his commitment to government oversight. He died on January 7, 1984, at the age of 59.
