Sergeant in the 9th Cavalry Regiment
Henry Johnson was a Sergeant in the 9th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. He is best known for his heroic actions during the Meeker Incident in 1879, where he single-handedly defended a group of civilians against a large group of Ute warriors. Johnson's actions that day earned him the Medal of Honor, which was awarded to him posthumously in 1999. He is considered one of the most decorated African American soldiers in U.S. history.
