Hipparchus of Rhodes was a Greek mathematician and astronomer who lived in the 2nd century BCE. He is considered one of the greatest astronomers of all time and made significant contributions to the field of trigonometry, cartography, and astronomy. He discovered the equinoxes and solstices, and his work on the Moon's phases and eclipses was well ahead of its time. He also developed the first known system of latitude and longitude.
