Uyghur scholar and activist
Ilham Tohti was a Uyghur scholar and activist who was born in 1953 in Xinjiang, China. He was a prominent figure in the Uyghur community and was known for his advocacy on human rights issues. Tohti was arrested in 2014 and sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison in 2017. Tohti was a vocal critic of the Chinese government's treatment of Uyghurs and was a strong advocate for Uyghur rights. He was also a prominent scholar and had written extensively on Uyghur history and culture.
