James II was the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1685 to 1688. He was a Catholic and his reign was marked by controversy and conflict with the English Parliament. He was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and fled to France, where he died in 1701. James was born in 1633 in St. James's Palace, London, England, and was the eldest son of King Charles II. He was known for his strong personality and his efforts to promote Catholicism in England.
