James Meredith was an American civil rights activist and the first black man admitted to the University of Mississippi. He was born in 1933 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and grew up in a poor farming family. Meredith attended high school in Chicago and later attended the University of Mississippi, where he faced intense racism and hostility. He became a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and was a key figure in the desegregation of the University of Mississippi.
