James S. McDonnell was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder of McDonnell Douglas, a leading aerospace company. McDonnell was also a prominent supporter of scientific research and education. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. McDonnell was born in St. Louis, Missouri and served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a pioneer in the field of aerospace engineering and made significant contributions to the development of the US space program.
