Schmitt studied history at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and later earned his PhD in history from the University of Paris. He is a prominent expert on medieval history, particularly on the topics of Catharism and the Knights Templar. Schmitt has written extensively on these subjects and has been a vocal critic of traditional historiography.
