Jean Vilar was a French theatre director and founder of the Avignon Festival. He was born in 1912 and died in 1995. He is known for his work in reviving the works of Anton Chekhov and his efforts to promote theatre as an art form. Vilar was also a strong advocate for the importance of theatre in society and was a vocal critic of censorship.
