Joseph A. Altsheler was an American writer, historian, and professor. He is best known for his historical novels, particularly the 'Tales of a Traveler' series. Born on November 16, 1839, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Altsheler attended the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania.
