British surgeon and pioneer of antiseptic surgery
Joseph Lister was a British surgeon who made significant contributions to the field of surgery. He is best known for his work on antiseptic surgery, which involved the use of carbolic acid to prevent infection. Lister was a pioneer in the use of sterile techniques and was one of the first surgeons to use antiseptics in the operating room. He was also a strong advocate for the use of gloves and other personal protective equipment in surgery. Lister was born in 1827 and died in 1912. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and was knighted in 1897 for his services to medicine.
