Apostle to Sri Lanka and defender of the Eucharist
Joseph Vaz was a Catholic priest who was born in Goa, India in 1651. He was ordained as a priest in 1678 and went on to become a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka. He was known for his bravery and dedication to his faith, and was particularly notable for his defense of the Eucharist during a time of persecution. Joseph Vaz was beatified in 1840 and canonized as a saint in 1889. He is still revered today as a hero of the Catholic faith.
