Retired Associate Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
Judge J. Michael Luttig is a retired Associate Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He served on the court from 1994 to 2017. Luttig was nominated to the court by President George H.W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate in 1994. During his tenure, he wrote over 1,000 opinions and was known for his conservative judicial philosophy. Luttig has been a vocal critic of judicial activism and has argued that the judiciary should not overstep its constitutional authority. He has also written extensively on topics such as federalism, separation of powers, and the role of the judiciary in American society. Born in 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland, Luttig graduated from Harvard University and later earned a law degree from Yale Law School. He has taught law at several universities and has been a frequent commentator on judicial issues.
