King of Wessex
King Alfred was a king of Wessex from 871 to 899. He is best known for his military victories against the Vikings and his efforts to promote education and literature. Alfred was a skilled military leader and strategist, and he is credited with saving England from Viking invasion. He was also a patron of the arts and education, and he encouraged the translation of classical works into Anglo-Saxon. Alfred was a devout Christian and was known for his piety and his commitment to his faith. He died in 899 and was buried in Winchester Cathedral.
