King of Portugal and Portugal's Age of Discovery
King Manuel I of Portugal was the King of Portugal from 1495 until his death in 1521. He was a member of the House of Aviz and the son of King John II of Portugal. Manuel I was a key figure in Portugal's Age of Discovery, which saw the country establish trade routes with Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He was a patron of exploration and navigation and supported the voyages of Vasco da Gama and other explorers. Manuel I died in 1521 and was succeeded by his son, John III of Portugal.
