African American poet and writer
Lucy Terry was an African American poet, writer, and teacher. She was born around 1724 in West Africa and was brought to the American colonies as a slave. Terry was the first known African American poet to publish a book of poetry, 'Poems Written by Lucy Terry, of Colrain, in the Year 1746'. She was also a teacher and a community leader. Terry's poetry is known for its powerful and expressive language, which reflects her experiences as a slave and a woman. She is considered one of the most important figures in African American literary history.
