Founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame
Marguerite Bourgeoys was a French-Canadian nun and founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She was born in Troyes, France in 1626 and moved to New France in 1653. She founded the first school in Ville Marie and established the Congregation of Notre Dame, which became a major force in Catholic education and mission work in North America. She is considered the spiritual mother of Montreal and is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church.
