Mary Seacole was a Jamaican-Scottish nurse, entrepreneur, and adventurer. Born in 1805 in Kingston, Jamaica, she is best known for her work during the Crimean War. Seacole established a 'British Hotel' near the front lines, providing care and comfort to wounded soldiers from all sides of the conflict.
