Matthew Henson was an American explorer and cartographer. He was born in 1866 in Washington, D.C. and began his career as a postal clerk. Henson joined Robert Peary's expedition to the North Pole in 1908 and became the first African American to reach the pole. He also worked as a cartographer and mapped much of the Arctic region.
