Soviet writer and playwright
A Russian novelist, playwriter, and essayist, Mikhail Bulgakov is best known for his surreal and philosophical novel 'The Master and Margarita'. Born in Kiev in 1891, Bulgakov studied law and literature before working as a civil servant. He began writing seriously during World War II, producing works that blended elements of realism with magical realism. Despite facing censorship and personal struggles, Bulgakov continued to write until his death in 1940.
