O'Brien has also worked as a correspondent for NPR and has written for various publications. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and has a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. O'Brien has won several awards for his reporting and has been a finalist for the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award. He is based in Washington, D.C.
