Astronomer and mathematician
Nicolas Copernic was a Polish astronomer and mathematician who is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in the history of science. Born in 1473 in Toruń, Poland, Copernic studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Krakow and later at the University of Bologna. He became a professor of mathematics at the University of Krakow and later at the University of Padua, where he taught and conducted research on astronomy and mathematics. Copernic's most famous work, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published in 1543, presented a heliocentric model of the universe, which challenged the geocentric model that had been widely accepted for centuries. This work had a profound impact on the development of modern astronomy and science.
