Nicolas Lacaille was a French astronomer and mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. He is best known for inventing the constellation Telescopium, which is named after the telescope. Lacaille was born in 1713 in Grasse, France and studied at the University of Aix-en-Provence. He went on to become a professor of mathematics at the University of Lyon and made several important discoveries in the field of astronomy.
