Soviet KGB officer and double agent
Oleg Penkovsky was a Soviet KGB officer who defected to the West and became a double agent. He was born in 1919 in the Soviet Union and rose through the ranks of the KGB. Penkovsky was known for his technical expertise and his ability to gather intelligence on the Soviet Union's nuclear program. He was executed by the KGB in 1963. Penkovsky's story has been the subject of several books and films, including the 2014 film "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". He is considered one of the most famous Soviet double agents of the Cold War era.
