Former Pope and Cardinal
Joseph Ratzinger, known as Pope Benedict XVI, is a German-born theologian and cardinal who served as the Pope of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013. He was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church and played a key role in shaping its doctrine and policies. Ratzinger was a professor of theology at the University of Regensburg and served as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He was elected Pope in 2005 and served for nearly eight years. During his papacy, he faced criticism for his handling of the Catholic Church's response to child abuse scandals. Ratzinger resigned in 2013 and was succeeded by Pope Francis. He is currently a cardinal emeritus and lives in the Vatican.
