American bomber pilot
Paul Warren Tibbets Jr. is a retired United States Air Force major general and a veteran of World War II. He is best known for commanding the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Tibbets was born on July 23, 1915, in Massillon, Ohio. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1937 and served in the US Army Air Forces during World War II. After the war, he became a test pilot and later served as a commander in the US Air Force. Tibbets is also known for his work as a consultant and speaker on leadership and management.
