Pedro Menendez is a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, St. Augustine, Florida. He is also known for his role in the founding of the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Menendez was born in 1519 in Seville, Spain, and died in 1574 in Havana, Cuba. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the Americas.
