Historical figure
Petronilla of Meath was a 14th-century Irish woman who was accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake in Kilkenny in 1324. She is the first recorded person to suffer this fate in Irish history. Petronilla's case is a fascinating example of the persecution of women during the medieval period. Despite the lack of evidence, Petronilla was convicted of witchcraft and executed in a brutal manner. Her story has been the subject of much historical study and debate.
