John XXIII was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Sotto il Monte, Italy, and was ordained as a priest in 1925. Roncalli served as a diplomat for the Vatican and was appointed as the Patriarch of Venice in 1953. He was elected Pope in 1958 and served until his death in 1963.
