Marine biologist and conservationist who wrote Silent Spring, a book that exposed the dangers of pesticides and led to their ban in the United States. Born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania, Carson was a leading voice in the environmental movement. She died in 1964 at the age of 56.
