Raymond Chandler was an American novelist and screenwriter, best known for his novels about private investigator Philip Marlowe. Born in 1888 in Chicago, Illinois, Chandler served in the US Army during World War I and later worked as a oil executive before turning to writing. His novels are known for their dark and atmospheric portrayal of 1930s and 1940s Los Angeles. Chandler's writing style, which blended elements of hard-boiled detective fiction and film noir, has been widely influential. He died in 1959 at the age of 71.
